My 15 yr old daughter is climbing Mt Kilimanjaro this wk for a worthy cause
This weekend, my 15 yr old daughter completed a 10 day trip, 3rd summer in a row, to Kibera slum, Nairobi, Kenya in support of two schools, Mobjap and FAFU. My daughter is the first and only unaccompanied teen to join with Crossing Thresholds on these trips. Crossing Thresholds is a NY based organization in support of these schools. Some of the folks from this yr's trip are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the kids and schools in Kibera. They started their trek this morning following the 7 day Lemosho route and should summit Uhuru Peak Saturday morning.
Below is a picture from Saturday of my daughter with Phenny, one of the young girls in Kibera that she has been “mentoring” since last year - FaceTime, Skype, email, send school supplies, Christmas gift, etc. Like all the kids at the Mobjap and FAFU schools, she wants to pass her tests to be able to move on to higher education outside of Kibera (the schools within Kibera get no state funding and rely strictly on private funding - my SIL was involved in founding both of these two schools). Phenny also wants to learn to fly and to be a pilot for Kenya Airways some day. I’m betting she gets there. 😎👍🏻
In my daughter's words.
I have been so fortunate to have a safe and supportive environment to learn and grow. I am climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to bring awareness to the plight of those through the accident of birth have known nothing but severe poverty.
The climb to 19,341' will be the toughest mental and physical challenge I may ever experience, but it will pale in comparison to the day to day struggle of those living in the slum. Please join me in making a difference to the wonderful kids in Kibera. Your support is meaningful.
Thank you.
